Iron Sharpens Iron Essay #41 The Power of Words Series – Genuine Progress Indicator: A Better Measure… or Another Tool to Capture Minds?

We have already seen how GDP became a deceptive protocol.
Now we look at the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) — an attempt to fix GDP’s flaws. But is it truly a better measure, or is it another tool designed to capture minds and push radical agendas?

What Is the Genuine Progress Indicator?

The Genuine Progress Indicator was developed in the mid-1990s as a more honest alternative to GDP. It starts with personal consumption and then makes adjustments for inequality, environmental damage, and social costs.
In theory, GPI is supposed to give a clearer picture of real human well-being than raw GDP.
How GPI Calculates Inequality, Degradation, and Breakdown
  • Income Inequality: GPI reduces the value of consumption when inequality rises, using statistical measures like the Gini coefficient.
  • Environmental Degradation: It subtracts estimated costs of pollution, climate damage, and resource depletion.
  • Social Breakdown: It subtracts costs related to crime, family breakdown, and lost leisure time.

These adjustments are based on estimates and value judgments — not pure objective science.

In Theory, Is GPI More Accurate?
Yes, in theory GPI is more accurate than GDP because it tries to account for things GDP ignores. However, it is still a centralized, top-down protocol that reduces complex human life into a single number.

The Real Purpose: Capturing Minds Through Changing Algorithms

This is where the deeper deception appears.
Real problems exist in society. But when they are turned into changing algorithms and presented through “scientific” or “compassionate” metrics, they become powerful tools to shape perception and advance radical agendas.
The same data can be interpreted in ways that justify more centralized control. Once minds are captured by these narratives, people begin to accept policies that reduce freedom and increase dependence on the system.

Everyday Examples People Can Relate To

Here are some common, real-life examples of how these protocols and narratives are used to capture minds and push agendas:

  • LGBTQ and Trans Rights Framed as “Inequality”
Issues around sports, bathrooms, pronouns, and school curricula are often presented as matters of basic “equality” and “justice.” When people question biological reality or parental rights, they are labeled as hateful or bigoted. This framing captures minds by turning disagreement into moral failure.
  • Benefits and Voting for Illegal Immigrants
Providing government benefits, healthcare access, and in some cases voting rights to people in the country illegally is often justified under “compassion” and “equity.” Critics are accused of lacking humanity. This shifts the Overton window and normalizes policies that many citizens see as unfair to legal residents and taxpayers.
  • Health Care and Insurance Changes
Major shifts in healthcare and insurance are frequently pushed using language of “equity,” “access,” and “justice.” While access to care is important, the protocols often lead to higher costs, longer wait times, and more centralized control over personal medical decisions.
  • Climate Policies and Everyday Life Restrictions
    • The push to ban or heavily restrict gas stoves, wood-burning fireplaces, and gas-powered cars is framed as necessary to fight “pollution” and “climate change.”
    • “Green New Deal” style policies and carbon offset programs are presented as moral imperatives.
    • People are told that opposing these changes means they don’t care about the planet or future generations.
    • In reality, these policies directly affect how families cook, heat their homes, and travel — yet they are sold as non-negotiable “progress.”
  • Making the “Privileged” or Wealthy Pay More
Many policies are designed so that wealthier people or those labeled as “privileged” pay significantly more through higher taxes, carbon taxes, luxury taxes, or regulations that increase costs. There have also been discussions and experiments with dynamic or personalized pricing in stores (including some grocery chains), where prices or discounts could change based on customer data, shopping history, or estimated income. This turns normal commerce into a tool for enforcing equity narratives.

These examples show how standard protocols and changing narratives around inequality, justice, and climate are used to reshape daily life while capturing the minds of the population.

The Spiritual Battle for the Mind

The Bible warns us clearly:

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
“Having eyes, do you not see? Having ears, do you not hear?” (Mark 8:18)

Many people have had their minds captured — not necessarily by force, but through carefully constructed narratives, changing algorithms, and “standard protocols” that feel scientific, compassionate, or progressive.

Once the mind is captured, the person willingly accepts policies and ideologies that lead to greater control and less freedom.

The True Alternative: Renewed Minds and the 9 Branches

God calls us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds — not by accepting the world’s changing metrics and ideologies.
The 9 Branches of the Tree of Life offers a completely different operating system. It does not rely on any single top-down number or narrative. Instead, it measures success through restoration, healing, truth, and a Servitude mindset at the lowest levels — personal, family, community, and county.
This is how we break free from the sticky spider web that has captured so many minds.

Iron sharpens iron.

Let us expose these protocols and narratives as tools that can be used to shape perception and advance agendas.
Let us stop letting changing algorithms and deceptive ideologies define reality for us.
Let us return to the true Word and allow God to renew our minds so we can see clearly.
That future really would be amazing — if we have the courage to choose truth in every word we speak and write.
